Sergent’s late goal lifts ‘Jackets over Wildcats

UW-Superior 2, St. Kate's 1

SUPERIOR, Wis. (November 4, 2017) – In their second meeting of a back-to-back with the Wildcats, the Yellowjackets found a goal late in the third period to win on their home ice.

The teams looked familiar with each other in the first period, firing off shots and making saves at a high rate. St. Kate's outshot the Yellowjackets 7-6 in the period, but neither team was able find the back of the net.

This trend continued in the second period, until Brede Postier found a goal for the Wildcats at 14:08. The 'Jackets immediately fired back as  Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) scored her first of the season, assisted by Celina Clark (Waterdown, Ont./St. Mary) and Sam Westgaard (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) at 14:33. This would tie the game once again, heading into the third.

Both teams were be tested early in the third period as each team was given a power play chance before the 14-minute mark, but neither team could capitalize.  Superior would find chances toward the end of the period; Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) would find the go-ahead score with 2:45 remaining. Superior would hold off an empty net attack from the Wildcats in the remaining minutes to grab the win.

Superior outshot St. Kates 32-20 in the contest, Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) was solid again in goal, stopping 19 shots on the day; nine penalties were called between the two teams.

The Yellowjackets will continue their home stand into next week as they play Hamline Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in Wessman Arena.
