UW-Superior 3, UW-River Falls 1
SUPERIOR, Wis. (December 1, 2017) – The Yellowjackets played one of their best games of hockey this season, getting a coveted WIAC win over the UW-River Falls Falcons Friday night. Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) scored the go-ahead goal in the second period.
The Falcons would get on the board first, as Madi Nolan scored a power-play goal at the 14:57 mark, but they wouldn't hold the lead long. Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) found the twine unassisted just two minutes later. The game would be knotted heading into the first intermission.
The 'Jackets found one of their three power-play chances in the second period, as a Falcon was called for interference. Patrick was able to capitalize on the short-handed Falcons, scoring in the final 40 seconds of the period, assisted by Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) and Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park). The 'Jackets held the lead 2-1 going into the third.
Defense was the name of the game in the third period and both teams kept in check, giving up only two penalties. River Falls gave one final effort in the final minutes, pulling their goalie; Goodin was able to score on a partial breakaway, getting the assist from Martinson.
The 'Jackets were on the lower side of the shotchart, getting only 16 compared to the Falcons 30. Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) would make 29 saves in the games, including nine in the third period.
Superior will play their next game at home, taking on Bethel Friday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. in Wessman Arena.
