ASHLAND, Wis. (December 13, 2017) – The Yellowjackets held an early first half lead, but the Lumberjacks came back to win the UMAC contest in the final minutes.
The 'Jackets found themselves in an early 5-0 hole to the Lumberjacks, but Nate Kalien (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) found the net from deep, on an assist from Vid Melinkovic, making it 5-3. Melinkovic would then tie the game at eight on a three of his own, assisted from Colton Williams (Columbia Heights, Minn. /Columbia Heights). The teams would trade baskets until the Yellowjackets found themselves out in front 20-14 on a Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) 3-pointer, assisted by Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East). The threes would continue to rain, and the 'Jackets held their lead to the first half buzzer, 42-37,
Williams would knock down a 2-point jumper to begin the second half. Two minutes later Milenkovic would get the second of two free throws. Andrew McGill (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union) found the scoreboard on a lay in assisted by Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights), getting the Yellowjacket lead to 10. The Lumberjacks would continue to fight, shortening the Yellowjacket lead around the 9:26 mark to three points. Scott answered with a layup, assisted by McGill, but Northland took a two-point lead a few posessions later. Superior would tie the game at 62-62 and then again at 64-64 on buckets in the paint from Scott and Coleman, but the Lumberjacks hit free throws down the stretch to seal the game 79-73.
Scott had 22 points to lead all scorers, while Coleman scored 19 and added four dimes. Williams was also in double-digits, getting 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
The Lumberjacks had four in double-digit scoring, led by Brandon Galland with 20 and Harrison Lucas at 18.
Superior will host their final contest before Christmas break this Saturday, Dec. 16, tipping off with the Martin Luther Knights at 3:30 p.m.
