ASHLAND, Wis. (December 13, 2017) – Superior put the hurt on the Northland Lumberjills Wednesday night, getting a huge 39-point win.
Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) opened the game for the 'Jackets, getting to the foul line an sinking two free throws, then Jade Tucker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) would gain the first and only lead need for the Yellowjackets on a layup. Superior would pile on a 9-2 run that included six Tucker points, stretching their lead out to 19-6 with one minute remaining in the first quarter. The Yellowjackets led at the buzzer, 19-9.
Superior then made an 8-0 run in the second quarter, getting the lead to 26-9 on points from Kontny, Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti), and Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield). The dominance continued to the first half horn, 'Jackets up 32-13 with a Norlin layup at the end, assisted by Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled)
Both teams took the first two minutes of the quarter to get a bucket; Kontny would score on an Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover) assisted layup. Superior continued to lockdown on defense, not allowing a Northland basket until the 1:48 mark of the quarter, while at the same time building their lead to 49-15 after baskets from Brittany Laehn (Gilmanton, Wis./Gilmanton) and Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) to finish the third go-around.
 The Yellowjackets would continue to roll in the fourth quarter, as the starters found rest, but that didn't stop bench players from piling on the points. Morgan Nepstad (Hendrum, Minn./Park Christian) found the net after an August Gordon (Bayfield, Wis./Bayfield) offensive rebound around the eight-minute mark, followed by a Kaly Kostrova (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) 2-point jumper, assisted by Eliie Leadstrom. Mackenzie Kmecik (Superior, Wis./Superior), Kourtney Palmi (Duluth, Minn./South Ridge), and Lindsey Jalivay (Eagan, Minn./Rosemount) would all get points in the final two minutes to complete the big win, 63-24.
Tucker led all scorers with 12 points, shooting 86 percent from the field, while Norlin scored nine. Kontny had seven, three of which came from the free throw line, ad Kane and Laehn both finished with six.
The 'Jackets held the Lumberjills to 19.5 percent shooting on the night, and out rebounded Northland 40-29. They also spread the ball around well, getting 15 assists.
Superior will come home for their final contest before Christmas break, taking on the Martin Luther Knights at 5:30 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 16.
