SUPERIOR, Wis. (December 30, 2017) – The Yellowjackets looked to be in good position heading into the final period of the inaugural Superior Showdown, but the Marian Sabres piled on four goals in the final period to take the Championship.
The first period was a back and forth game as Marian collected five shots on goal, to the Yellowjackets' four. The first intermission would come at a 0-0 draw.
The action picked up right away in the second period, as Marian's Hunter Stewart found the net unassisted, just one minute in.
Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor) soon fired back, getting his ninth goal of the year just 24 seconds later on an assist from Evgeny Yakovlev (Belgorod, Russia) to tie the game up.
The tie didn't last very long, as Marian scored 14 seconds later, taking the lead. The game would reamin in favor of Marian throughout the second period, holding a 2-1 lead at the second horn.
Marian would get a goal to open the period at 2:44, and then again a minute later to open up the game 4-1. Their final two goals were tacked on in the last 10 minutes.
Superior found themselves in the penalty box on six separate occasions, but only gave up two scores on the six power plays. Cole Skinner (Lunenberg, N.S./Parkview Education Centre) faced 29 shots from the Sabres, including 13 in the final period. The 'Jacket did see a bright spot on the box score, wining the faceoff matchup, 40-28.
The Yellowjackets will host their fourth game in a row next Friday, playing a non-conference game against St. Mary's Jan. 5 at 7:05 p.m.
