The University of Wisconsin Superior fell to the no. 7 University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Blugolds by a 2-0 final in the Yellowjackets' regular season finale on Friday night at Wessman Arena in Superior.
UW-Superior (7-15-2, 1-5-1 WIAC) honored its five seniors before the game - defensemen
Matt Audette (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln H.S.),
Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas H.S.) and
Owen Stauber (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown H.S.), and forwards
Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Man./Morden Collegiate Institute) and
Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium) but then got down to business against No. 7 UW-Eau Claire (15-5-3, 4-2-0 WIAC). The two teams skated to a fairly even first period, with the Blugolds held a 10-6 advantage in the shots on goal department headed to the locker room for the first time. The Yellowjackets would come out firing in the second period, out-shooting UWEC 13-11 in during the second frame, but it was the Blugolds who would held the advantage after two. Garrett Clement scored his 11th of the season for Eau Claire at 5:02 of the second, getting an assist from Patrick Moore. The Blugolds went on the powerplay shortly after scoring that goal, but UW-Superior kept them scoreless on one shot in the chance. The Yellowjackets would have a powerplay chance late in the period after a goaltender interference penalty assessed to Clement, who tripped up junior
Kyle Miller (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake H.S.) in front of the net.
Unfortunately for UWS, the tide continued to turn in the favor of UW-Eau Claire in the third period. The Blugolds would get four chances on the powerplay in the third period, including an extended 4-on-3 opportunity early in the period. The Yellowjackets would hold UWEC scoreless with the man advantage, but the Blugolds broke through with the game-clincher at 15:27 of the period as Colton Wolter gave them the 2-0 advantage, assisted by Kyle Lee and Mac Jensen. Eau Claire finished 0-for-5 on the powerplay while UW-Superior would finish 0-for-1.
Junior
Brandon Anderson (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech H.S.) and freshman
Tanner Skaja (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech H.S.) each had four shots to lead the Yellowjackets. Miller made 31 saves before being pulled for the extra skater with 1:02 remaining. Jay Deo had 22 stops in a shutout effort for UW-Eau Claire.
