The University of Wisconsin Superior ended its 2016-17 regular season campaign with its fifth consecutive victory, knocking off Northland College 3-2 in overtime in the team's annual "pink" game promoting breast cancer awareness on Wednesday night at Wessman Arena.
First-year forward
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) and senior
Leah Elledge (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) broke away with a 2-on-0, with Martinson securing the tick-tack pass for the game-winning goal at 0:27 into the overtime period to allow the Yellowjackets a sigh of relief and a secure a victory.
Northland (4-21-0) got on the board first, with Samantha Scott scoring a powerplay tally to the top glove-side corner of the net to give the LumberJills a lead midway through the first period at 10:12. UW-Superior (12-13-0) had an answer rather quickly as junior forward
Jessica Marsalla (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing H.S.)Â netted her third of the season at 14:54 of the first, getting an assist from sophomore
Sam Westgaard (Elk River, Minn./Elk River H.S.). The Yellowjackets held a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal after the opening period, but held control of the puck throughout the second, out-shooting the LumberJills 17-4 in the frame. Still, the score held at 1-1 headed to the locker room after 40 minutes.
First-year forward
Leah Elledge (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) gave the Yellowjackets the lead just 21 seconds into the third period, breaking away on her own for the unassisted tally. Northland had an answer just before the nine-minute mark of the frame, when Ally Covert ripped a shot from the point for the game-tying score. Vivienne Kallio had the assist for the the LumberJills. The third period resembled the first far more than the second, with UW-Superior out-shooting Northland 13-9 in the frame, and the two teams would go to the overtime period knotted at 2-2. The Yellowjackets would break through on the lone shot on goal of the overtime session to take home the victory.
Senior
Kim Kobar (The Pas, Man./Margaret Barbour Collegiate) made 19 stops for UW-Superior while picking up her fifth-straight victory between the pipes as well. Chloe Marshall made 41 saves for the LumberJills, suffering the tough-luck loss.

The Yellowjackets will open the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference O'Brien Cup Tournament on the road Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25. UW-Superior will take on the No. 3 University of Wisconsin River Falls in the semifinal round. Official game times are yet to be announced.
