Five Yellowjackets reach double figures in pull-away victory over Crown

The University of Wisconsin Superior looks to end its 2016-17 campaign with a winning streak in tact, taking the first step Friday night as the Yellowjackets pulled away from Crown College in the second half for a 94-77 victory over the Storm in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota.

UW-Superior (7-17, 6-9 UMAC) can close out its season with two-straight victories if the Yellowjackets can secure a season sweep of the University of Minnesota Morris on Saturday night though the Cougars clinched the fifth and final spot in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference postseason with a victory last weekend. Five players reached double figures scoring for UW-Superior on Friday against Crown (8-16, 5-10 UMAC) with freshman forward Rafael Monteiro (São Paulo, Brazil/Santa Marcelina College) leading the way, scoring 17 points to go with 12 rebounds, adding five assists, two blocks, and one steal on the night. Sophomore Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights H.S.) added 16 points for the Yellowjackets, who led by as few as two points past the midpoint of the second half at 59-57 with 9:17 to go in the game. UW-Superior would score seven-straight points late and 12-of-14 overall to push away in the closing mintues of the match-up.

Junior Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East H.S.) and sophomore Rob Lander (Pitesti, Romania/Trinity International School) each had 15 points on the night, while sophomore Trevor Oswald (Isle, Minn./Isle H.S.) added 13 points off the bench, one of 11 different players to score for the Yellowjackets on the night. UW-Superior got 39 points off its bench and pulled away in large part thanks to hitting 8-of-11 three-pointers in the second half.The Yellowjackets shot 50.7 percent for the game, while Crown finished shooting 40.0 percent. Austin VanDerHeyden had a game-high 22 points off the bench for the Storm.

UW-Superior and UM-Morris will close out the UMAC regular season on Saturday afternoon in Morris, Minnesota. Opening tip is set for 5:00 p.m. following the women's contest.
