No. 3 Stevens Point ends Yellowjackets' season in WIAC semifinals

The University of Wisconsin Superior saw its 2016-17 season come to a close Saturday as the Yellowjackets fell 8-1 against the No. 3-ranked University of Wisconsin Stevens Point in game two of their Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinal series in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

The Pointers jumped out to an early lead for the second-straight night against the Yellowjackets with Jacob Barber putting UW-Stevens Point (20-4-3) ahead on the powerplay at 6:31 of the first period. He got an assist from Kyle Sharkey. UW-Superior (8-19-2) had its first powerplay opportunity of the game nearly out of the gates, going a man up just 0:21 into the contest but would be kept scoreless. The Pointers' Tanner Karty would add to the lead at 11:53 of the first, putting Stevens Point up by two while getting assists from Willem Nong-Lambert and Logan Fredericks. Freshman Bruno Birzitis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Distance Education Secondary) got the Yellowjackets on the board moments later, cutting into the lead at 15:08 with assists from sophomore Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) and freshman Liam Blais (Uxbridge, Ont./Uxbridge Secondary). Unlike Friday night when UWS was held to just one shot on goal in the first period, UW-Superior trailed just 14-10 in the category after one.

The Pointers kept the pressure on early in the second period, extending their lead by two in a 30-second span. Lawrence Cornellier scored on the powerplay, getting assists from Ryan Bittner and Drew McLean just before the four-minute mark before Karty added his second of the day, just 34 seconds later at 4:26 of the second, assisted by Drew McLean. Stevens Point and Cornellier would continue to pile on in the second period, as he netted his second of the day with a short-handed score at 15:52 assisted by Barber. He'd add his third of the day just 87 seconds later, this time on the powerplay, assisted by Barber and McLean.

Cornellier continued to add to his impressive night in the third, adding a fourth goal just 2:18 into the period, once again assisted by Barber.UW-Stevens Point added yet another powerplay goal at the midpoint of the final frame, with Austin Kelly scoring at 9:45 assisted by Ryan and Mark Bittner.

With the season concluding, UW-Superior bids farewell to the team's five seniors: defensemen Matt Audette (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln H.S.), Eric Shand (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas H.S.), and Owen Stauber (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown H.S.) as well as forwards Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Man./Morden Collegiate Institute) and Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium).
