Short-handed Yellowjackets see third period get away against No. 4 Stevens Point

The third period got away from the University of Wisconsin Superior as the No. 4-ranked University of Wisconsin Stevens Point knocked off the Yellowjackets 6-3 on Saturday in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

UW-Superior (7-15-1, 1-5-0 WIAC) stacked up 57 minutes in penalties compared to just 23 for the home team, as the Pointers finished with nine powerplay chances compared to just a pair of the Yellowjackets. After a scoreless first period, Logan Fredericks put No. 4 UW-Stevens Point (16-4-3, 5-1-0 WIAC) up just 1:54 into the second. UWS had an answer as sophomore Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) scored at 4:07 of the period, assisted by senior Anton Svensson (Sodertalje, Sweden/Igelstavikens Gymnasium). The Yellowjackets would take the lead at 4:50 of the period as freshman Colton Nelson (Hershey, Pa./Edmond North H.S.) scored, assisted by junior Cal Miska (Stacy, Minn./North Branch H.S.). Stevens Point tied the score with about five minutes remaining in the period as Stephan Beauvais had the equalizer on the powerplay. After a controversial hit on the Yellowjackets' Jordan Neduzak (Morden, Man./Morden Collegiate Institute) that somehow put the Pointers on the powerplay after a bench minor was assessed to UW-Superior, Lawrence Cornelier scored at 15:37 of the second with the man advantage, and Stevens Point took the 3-2 lead to the locker room after two.

Freshman Jacob Hamilton had the equalizer for the Yellowjackets just 3:19 into the third, getting an assist from sophomore Viktor Sallhag (Vasteras, Sweden/Wenströmska Gymnasium). UWS would rack up 12 penalties in the third period compared to just six total for Stevens Point. Meanwhile, the Pointers scored the next three goals, although none officially on the powerplay. Fredericks scored his second of the day, the eventual gamewinner at 6:14 of the period followed by scores by Jono Davis at 9:59 and Kelly O'Brien at 14:45 of the third. Junior Kyle Miller (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake H.S.) made 36 saves for the Yellowjackets, while Max Milosek made 15 stops for Stevens Point.
