The University of Wisconsin Superior swept a non-conference doubleheader, knocking off Finlandia Unversity 13-3 and 9-5 on Friday afternoon to end a winning homestand at Whereatt Field in Superior.
Four first-year Yellowjackets took the mound on the day for UW-Superior (7-15), with game one belonging to rookie
Austin Miller (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison H.S.), who threw 6.0 innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out one on the day. Freshman
Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) took the mound for the seventh, allowing just one hit in a scoreless inning to follow up after launching his third home run of the homestand in the bottom of the sixth.
The Yellowjackets did the majority of their damage, scoring 11 of their 13 runs, during the fourth inning. UWS sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, needing just seven hits including a pair of doubles. The Lions' Cole Howard walked just two on the day but hit a batter and threw three wild pitches in four innings of work. Finlandia (4-20) also had two errors in the inning.
All nine starters had at least one hit for the Yellowjackets, with senior
Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel H.S.) providing two hits, two RBIs, and two runs on the day. Albertson was 2-for-4 while catching and scored three runs on the day. Sophomores
Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna H.S.) and
Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) each drove in a pair of runs.
UW-Superior 9, Finlandia 5
A first-inning error by the UW-Superior infield helped bring across a run for the Lions in game two, but T. Miller and senior catcher
Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) quickly gave the Yellowjackets a lead with a pair of solo home runs in the second. Finlandia hit a home run of its own, the second of the day for infielder Joey Krug as they scored three runs in the top of the third to regain the lead. UWS exploded for another big inning, crossing the plate six times in the bottom of the third to retake the lead for good.
Three walks and a hit-batter helped the Yellowjackets bat around in the bottom of the third. Miller added a two-run single and Mattson a second RBI on the day in the inning. Sophomore
Trevor Roszczewski (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union H.S.) allowed two earned in 4.0 innings to pick up his first victory for UW-Superior. Rookie
Elliot Danhoff (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone H.S.) tossed the final three innings for his first collegiate save.
