A pair of high-scoring innings helped push the College of St. Scholastica past the University of Wisconsin Superior in the teams' Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wade Stadium as the Saints knocked off the Yellowjackets 19-4 and 11-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Duluth.

St. Scholastica (19-6, 8-0 UMAC) remained unbeaten in league play as the Saints scored 11 runs in the fourth inning of game one, chasing UW-Superior starter Grant Schneider (Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial H.S.) (2-2) after 3.1 innings, allowing nine runs on 11 hits while striking out three on the day. CSS did not quit there, scoring in four of the six innings they came to the plate. The Yellowjacket defense did its pitchers no favors with five errors on the day. The Saints' Martin Alcoverde (4-1) worked the first five innings, allowing just a pair of runs on seven hits while striking out four. Senior catcher Nik Mattson (Superior, Wis./Superior H.S.) had two hits including an RBI double in the top of the second, and senior shortstop Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward H.S.) added a two-run single in the ninth as UW-Superior (7-19, 3-5 UMAC) scraped a pair of runs across in the top of the seventh before St. Scholastica closed out game one.

Four errors by the Saints helped the Yellowjackets scrape across three runs in the opening two frames, as sophomore Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna H.S.) singled home junior Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle H.S.) followed by an RBI groundout from rookie Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) in the first. After reaching on an error to lead off the second, sophomore Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) came around to score on a groundout by rookie Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.). UWS would get no closer on the day, as St. Scholastica scored eight runs in the bottom of the first with seven-straight batters reaching with one out to chase Yellowjacket starter Jonah Lundequam (Cumberland, Wis./Cumberland H.S.).

The Saints' trio of pitchers combined to allow just five hits, retiring the final seven batters and 16 of the final 17 overall.  CSS tacked on thre more runs in the fifth, but the UW-Superior relief corps tossed shutout ball for their own final 3.1 innings, allowing just three hits. Rookie Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount H.S.) had a pair of strikeouts in the ninth, and freshman Elliot Danhoff (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone H.S.) had 2.1 shutout innings earlier in the game.
