The University of Wisconsin Superior could not capitalize on its opportunities, out-hitting the University of Northwestern but falling in both ends of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader as the Eagles knocked off the Yellowjackets 5-3 in game one and 4-3 in extra innings in the nightcap.
UW-Superior (13-14, 6-6 UMAC) scored first in game one as sophomore outfielder
Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) came in to score on an RBI groundout off the bat of rookie shortstop
Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.). Patrick finished 3-for-4 in the game, coming around to score a second run later in the game. Northwestern (12-16, 8-2 UMAC) plated the next five runs, scoring in four different innings and making the Yellowjackets pay for four errors on the day, as third baseman Ann Lokke had each of the Eagles' two runs batted in on the day.
Four straight singles leading off the seventh scored the UW-Superior's second run on the day, and a third came around on an RBI groundout but the Yellowjackets would come no closer as the last three batters were out in order. First-year right-hander
Megan Pehrson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) suffered the defeat in both ends of the doubleheader, falling to 9-6 on the season as she threw 10.0 innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs while striking out eight on the day.
Northwestern scored again in the first inning of game two as first baseman Jennifer Ankrom, who drove in three on the day, singled home the game's first run. Junior outfielder
Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) got the Yellowjackets on the board with an RBI double in the top of the sixth, eventually sending the game to extras tied 1-1. After a pair of singles by junior
Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes H.S.) and Taipale leading off the top of the eighth, sophomore
Bailey Armstrong (Scandia, Minn/Forest Lake H.S.) lifted a two-run single to give UWS the lead.
A hit-batter, a single, and an error on the Yellowjacket infield loaded the bases ahead of a flukey play as the Eagles scored two runs on a pop fly to the catcher, knotting the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning. A wild pitch followed, bringing home the go-ahead run and a victory for Northwestern and Lauren Silbernick, who finished with two strikeouts and seven hits in eight innings of work.
