Yellowjackets win third-straight in extras but Macalester claims split in Sunday twinbill

Macalester College claimed a season series victory over the University of Wisconsin Superior, but the Yellowjackets won their third-straight in game on Sunday by a 7-5 final in 10 innings before settling for a doubleheader split after an 8-7 Scots victory in game two at Nicholson Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.

A two-run double in the bottom of the first gave Macalester (20-12) an early lead, but freshman right-hander Austin Miller (Harrison, Ohio/William Henry Harrison H.S.) settled down from there, shutting out the Scots the rest of the way in his 5.0 innings of work, allowing five hits and striking out three on the day. Four singles tied the game for UW-Superior (10-20) in the top of the fourth, with senior Kyle Bellin (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly H.S.) driving in both with two outs in the inning. Three more singles loaded the bases for the Yellowjackets in the third, with the go-ahead run coming home on a wild pitch before junior Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel H.S.) brought home another run on an RBI groundout. Rookie Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) was 4-for-4 on the day, and he singled leading off the seventh, eventually coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by junior Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle H.S.).

Macalester had an answer in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extras, with the UWS defense helping them along with a dropped fly ball in the outfield. Three-straight reached leading off the inning, bringing home the first run before junior lefty Brady Stocker (River Falls, Wis./River Falls H.S.) came on and picked up a strikeout for the first out of the day. The Scots would get a two-run double from Alex Baretta to tie the game, but Stocker got another strikeout and a runner thrown out at home attempting to score on a passed ball to prevent Macalester from walking off victorious. After two scoreless innings, the Yellowjackets strung together singles once again in the 10th, with Albertson and sophomore Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna H.S.) each providing an RBI in the inning. Stocker (1-1) turned ou the victory, allowing four hits but striking out five in three scoreless innings. He handed the ball to junior Ryan Rukavina (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) for the save in a scoreless tenth. Thomas Shogren (0-1) was the fifth pitcher of the day, allowing two earned on five hits in 2.0 innings, striking out two.

Macalester 8, UW-Superior 7
UW-Superior struck first in game two, but the Scots scored seven runs in the third inning which proved the difference in the game. Rookie right-hander Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount H.S.) (0-3) got the start on the mound, surrendering eight runs on 13 hits in 5.0 innings of work, striking out three on the day. Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater H.S.) would finish 2-for-3 in the game, driving in a pair while his brother, sophomore Stephen Albertson (Stillwater, Minn/Stillwater H.S.) finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored on the day. Each drove in one run in the first, and junior Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski H.S.) added a third run in the inning. Bellin drove in a run on a groundout, and the younger Albertson added his second RBI of the day later in the inning. Nine hits helped Macalester string together their seven runs in the third, taking the lead for the duration. While UWS tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth inning, the Scots added the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to keep the Yellowjackets at bay.  Henry Smith (1-0) pitched the final 3.2 innings for Macalester, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out one for his first victory of the season.
