Yellowjackets drop final non-conference doubleheader to St. Olaf

The University of Wisconsin Superior ended its non-conference schedule dropping both ends of a doubleheader against St. Olaf College on Thursday as the Oles defeated the Yellowjackets 8-7 and 6-2 in Northfield, Minnesota.

UW-Superior (11-25) lumped all of its scoring into a pair of innings in game one as St. Olaf (15-22) came back from a 7-6 deficit in walk-off fashion to take the opener. The Yellowjackets had four errors on the day, and the Oles scored a pair of unearned runs as they opened a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. UWS did damage with two outs in the top of the third as five-straight batters reached, including a two-run gaffe on the St. Olaf infield that helped the Yellowjackets get on the board. Freshman Corey Albertson continued the damage with a two-run double before the Oles finally ended the damage.

The see-saw battle continued as St. Olaf scored three in the bottom of the fifth, and Ryan Iverson did the majority of the damage with a two-run triple, eventually coming in to score himself on a passed ball. UW-Superior had an answer in the top of the sixth, regaining the lead as they strung together three hits in the inning. After rookie Cameron Lee (Durban, South Africa/Kearsney College) scored on a passed ball early in the inning, senior Chad Patko (Stone Lake, Wis./Hayward H.S.) doubled home a pair of runs to give the Yellowjackets a 7-6 lead headed to the final frame. After a walk leading off the bottom of the seventh, St. Olaf scored two runs as UWS made two errors on the same play off the bat of William Cipos to earn a walk-off victory.

Sophomore right-hander Trevor Roszewski suffered the loss, working the final 4+ innings on the mound, allowing just two earned runs on five hits. Max Marshall picked up the win on the hill for the Oles, working the final 1.2 inning allowing just on earned while striking out one.

St. Olaf 6, UW-Superior 2
St. Olaf struck first once again in game two, scoring four runs on just three hits in the bottom of the second, aided by a Yellowjacket error, a passed ball, and a hit batter. UW-Superior scored single runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, as infielder Jason Steinke (Sebeka, Minn./Sebeka H.S.) scored on a passed ball after walking with one out. Two hit batters and two walks helped St. Olaf score a pair in the bottom of the inning to push the lead out to 6-1. Sophomore Stephen Albertson (Stillwater, Minn/Stillwater H.S.) singled leading off the top of the sixth, coming around to score on a double by rookie Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount H.S.) just a batter later. The Yellowjackets would get no closer on the day, as Elliot Syerson picked up the save with a perfect final inning.

Freshman Zach Bennett (Corona, Calif./Santiago H.S.) (0-1) suffered the defeat on the mound for UW-Superior, allowing just two earned runs on five hits but walking four in the game. Rookie Elliot Danhoff (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone H.S.) walked one in 1.2 hitless innings to close out the game. Ben Arndt picked up the victory for St. Olaf, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
