The University of Wisconsin Superior forced extra innings in its Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament elimination game against the University of Northwestern, but for the second-straight match-up between the two teams, the Eagles edged out the Yellowjackets in the eighth inning, ending their season 5-4 at Kenwood Field in Duluth, Minnesota.
UW-Superior (16-17) came out firing in the top of the first, scoring three runs on four hits. Junior outfielder
Ciarra Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) reached leading off the inning on a dropped outfield fly. Sophomore
Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) followed that up with a first pitch single to put runners on first and third. Junior infielder
Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes H.S.) singled home Taipale, and sophomore designated hitter
Bailey Armstrong (Scandia, Minn/Forest Lake H.S.) made it three straight to reach, scoring Patrick. First-year infielder
Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park H.S.) singled home the Yellowjackets' third run later in the inning, but Northwestern (17-19) had an answer in the bottom of the inning as six of the first seven batters reached base including doubles by Mindy Forcier and Ellen Larkin as four different Eagles had an RBI in the inning.
Both pitchers settled down from there with
Megan Pehrson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.) scattered 11 hits in the game, allowing five runs while striking out five. Lauren Silbernick earned a complete-game victory for Northwestern, allowing just three earned on 10 hits. Patrick led off the top of the fifth with a double, eventually coming around to score the game-tying run on a groundball off the bat of rookie infielder
Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids H.S.). The Eagles strung together three hits in the bottom of the eighth to scrape across the game-winning run, knocking off UW-Superior in extras to eliminate the Yellowjackets from the tournament.
UWS bids farewell to a trio of seniors: right-handed pitcher
Sarah Hendrickson (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld H.S.) and outfielders
Traci Popple (Jim Falls, Wis./Cornell H.S.) and
Shelby Gerken (Baraboo, Wis./Baraboo H.S.).
