SUPERIOR (September 5, 2017) – 'Jacket volleyball put on a convincing performance in their home opener against the Finlandia University Lions, winning three straight games, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 to take their fourth win of the season.
Superior found themselves in an early hole, down 10-6 in the first game, but soon stormed back going up 18-16 after a kill from
Leah Nightingale (Dayton, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's ). The final point of the game came from
Anna Ribich (Biwabik, Minn./Mesabi East) after a good set from
Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville).
The second game was not just similar in score. Again the Yellowjackets were down early, this time 6-1. But after gaining some ground back,
Doranna Blascyk (Hoffman, Minn./Hoffman) went on a serving streak to push Superior ahead 13-12.
In the final game, Finlandia went up 16-9 on the Yellowjackets, but again they found a way to power through and go up 17-16 after a flurry of kills from
Ashley Runck (Lakeville, Minn./Apple Valley ) and
Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley).
Elise Ertl (Phillips, Wis./Phillips)e put up nine kills in the game, followed by Ribich who had eight, and Holz seven. VerWay was the main set up woman with 17 in the game, and
Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna ) was the main defender, digging 12 balls and not missing on a service.
Kasia Holmstrom recorded eight kills for the Lions, while libero Jessica Diaz had 11 digs in the game.
The Yellowjackets travel to Macalester this weekend for the Macalester Tournament Sept. 8-9, featuring Knox College, UW-Falls, and St. Catherine.
