With the start of the 2017 season over the weekend, so kicked off the Allison DeGroot era of the Yellowjacket women's soccer program. Sunday, despite owning an offensive and territorial advantage against Lakeland, the Yellowjackets came up just short and were forced to wait longer for their first win of the season.

The wait didn't turn out ot be a long one, lasting less than 48 hours.

In their second game of the season the Yellowjackets got an early goal and stout team defense made it stand up as they defeated UMAC foe North Central University 1-0 in a non-conference tilt in Minneapolis Tuesday afternoon.

The victory, in addition to being the first of the season for the Yellowjackets, was also the first in the head coaching career of DeGroot, who took the helm of the Yellowjackets in April.

The Yellowjackets started with a flourish, applying pressure early and tallying their first goal of the season less than 10 minutes in. Liza Shelquist (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) found a loose ball off of a corner kick and capitalized, notching the second goal of her career to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 at 9:25. Emma Street (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis) earned her first collegiate point with an assist on the marker.

From there the Yellowjackets turned to their defense, turning aside numerous opportunities for the Rams. North Central outshot the Yellowjackets 11-10, but the Yellowjackets had the edge in shots on goal, 8-7. Senior Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) got the start in goal for the Yellowajckets and was perfect as the team's last line of defense, making seven saves in the match in picking up her first win of the season. Henderson was been solid in the team's first two outings, stopping eight of nine shots for a save percentage of .889.

Shelquist had four shots on goal in the match to lead the Yellowjackets, who also got shots on goal from Britt Zieroth (Twig, Minn./Proctor), Chloe Schmaltz (Beaumount, Alta./Escole Secondaire Beaumont Composite), and Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior).
