SUPERIOR, Wis. (September 8, 2017) – The Yellowjackets found goals late in the second half to push them over Macalester 2-1.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle, the teams exchanged shots, corners, and headers. Superior found a few openings, on corner kicks. Gunnar O'Neil-Sengbush was the main corner man for the Yellowjackets, owning three in the first half. Their best chance was on a crossed ball from Sengbush that barely missed the head of
Mualigbe Keita (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Prairie Seeds Academy) in the 39th minute, and the shot went wide-left. The Scots also had a few chances, but Herd made six saves to keep the score 0-0 at the end of the first.
The Yellowjackets came out on the attack in the second half. Their persistence finally paid off in the 72nd minute. Keita scored on a scramble for the ball in the box. They later added to their lead in the 87th minute, after
Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) used some fancy footwork to score on a left-footed shot after a give-n-go from
Fernando Bicalho (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil/Kickapoo (Mo.)). The Scots scored soon after in the 89th minute to make the final 2-1.
Macalester outshot Superior 21-15 in what was surprisingly a defensive game.
Superior will be away from home for a while, going on the road next week to play Augsburg on Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. and then will open their UMAC schedule on the road vs Minnesota Morris on Sept. 16 at 2 p.m.
