Northwestern 74, UW-Superior 69
ST. PAUL, Minn. (January 10, 2018) – The Yellowjackets got out to a hot start against Northwestern Wednesday night, but the Eagles stormed back in the second half to down the 'Jackets 74-69.
Superior got out to an early lead in the first half, Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) and Shaq Coleman (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) would get back-to-back layups to make it 4-3 just two minutes in. Colton Williams (Columbia Heights, Minn. /Columbia Heights) would find the basket after an offensive rebound, followed by Scott on the assist layup from Trevor Paulus (Brule, Wis./Northwestern) to make it 10-5 'Jackets.
Almost everyone got in the scoring book as Andrew McGill (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union) hit the lay in and Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) drained a 3-pointer to make it 20-11. Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB Belgrade, Serbia) would make it 28-19 at 5:27, but the Eagles stormed back to cut the lead to 30-29 with one minute remaining. Coleman would get two more points late to mark 14 on the half and give the Yellowjackets a 32-29 lead at halftime.
Milenkovic would hit one-of-two free throws to open the half, followed by a Milenkovic-assisted three by Scott. Williams would get a score after Coleman stole the ball around the 15-minute mark. Scott hit another Milenkovic-assisted 3-pointer, while Coleman would found another layup to tie at 49.
The buckets continued to fall for Superior, Williams and Coleman found layups with around seven minutes remaining, but the Eagles would get a 66-62 lead at 3:43. Williams would hit a 3-pointer out of a timeout for the 'Jackets, followed by a Northwestern bucket to get the lead back to three. Coleman hit two free throws with 17 seconds remaining, but it wouldn't be enough, falling 74-69.
Coleman was the game-high scorer, getting 29 on the night. He shot 11-of-12 from the field, and 7-of-8 from the foul line; he also had eight rebounds and three steals. Williams and Scott both finished with 11 points.
The Eagles had two players in Slagter and Bellefeuille with 17 apiece.
Superior will continue their UMAC road games this weekend, playing at North Central this Saturday at 3 p.m.
