Yellowjackets’ winning streak continues at Finlandia

UW-Superior 86, Finlandia 70

HANCOCK, Mich. (January 15, 2018) – Superior continued their winning streak this afternoon in a non-conference matchup with Finlandia. Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) poured in 20 points for the 'Jackets, but it was an entire team effort to get the win.

Norlin scored the first four points, but the Yellowjackets were down 7-4 to the Lions around the seven-minute mark. The Lions continued to put up points, getting out to a 22-14 lead at 2:17, but buckets from Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), Norlin, and Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) scored eight straight, tying the game at 22 after one.

The hot shooting didn't stop for the 'Jackets, Norlin was able to put up eight more points in the first two minutes. Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) would add a fastbreak layup at 6:35, and then Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover) drained a 3-pointer on the following possession, getting an assist from Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled), followed by a three from Reinersten assisted by Leger to make it a nine-point game. The lead opened up to 11 points at the half.

Larson got the lead to 13 in the third, on a Jade Tucker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) assist. Tucker then scored her own bucket on an assist from Larson at the 6:58 to make it a 14-point lead. Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) was able to push the lead to 18 with 1:34 left in the period on a 3-pointer and Reinertsen made it 20 at 1:03; the 'Jackts were rolling.

It was easy going in the final quarter for Superior. Kane was able to knock down two free throws and a jumper early in the quarter, followed more buckets from Reinertsen and Carpenter. Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior) and Morgan Nepstad (Hendrum, Minn./Park Christian) hit free throws down the stretch, to seal the 16-point win for the 'Jackets.

Norlin's 20 points came in only 19 minutes, while Reinertsen scored 16 points on the night. Three more 'Jackets scored in double-digits, including Larson with 12, Kontny with 10, and Kane also with 10.

The Lions had three players score in double-digits.

Superior will get back to UMAC play next weekend when they play Minnesota Morris Saturday January 20 at 5 p.m. in Morris, Minn.
