Gustavus Adolphus 5, UW-Superior 3

ST. PETER, Minn. (January 16, 2018) – The Yellowjackets battled with No. 6 Gustavus Adolphus on the road Tuesday night, pushing the Gusties in the final period of play, but were unable to get the win.

The first period was all Gustavus, as the 'Jackets struggled to get shots up, shooting six times, compared to the Gusties' 15. Gustavus Adolphus would score twice in the period to hold a 2-0 lead after one.

The Gusties would score one more to open the second period, going up 3-0 with 11 minutes remaining. Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) soon changed that with her 14 goal on the season, getting assists from Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) and Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) at 10:36 of the period. Amber Heidenriech was up next for Superior, scoring in the final two minutes of the period, her sixth of the season, on an assist from Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines). The 'Jackets were in reach after two, down 3-2.

The final period heated up with excitement. Both teams staved off attacks early in the period, until Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) proved herself at 10:34 of the period, getting the unassisted goal from the defender position.

The Yellowjackets were able to hold off the Gustie offense until the 18:43 mark of the period, putting Gustavus up 4-3. The Yellowjacket net was then cleared to add the extra skater, but the Gusties capitalized, scoring the empty netter to end the contest 5-3.

The Yellowjackets were succumb to the penalty box on three separate occasions, but the penalty kill was able to prevent any Gustie scoring. Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) saved 24 shots on goal.

Superior will return home this Friday as they jump back into WIAC play, taking on UW-Eau Claire for the second time this season. Puck drops at 7 p.m. in Wessman Arena.
