Superior wins fifth straight UMAC contest

UW-Superior 62, Crown 49

ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. (January 3, 2018) – Superior strolled to another UMAC win Wednesday night, beating the Crown College Storm by 13 points.

The 'Jackets were solid in the first quarter once again as Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) scored the first two on a layup, assisted by Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) almost immediately off the tip. Crown responded, going up 10-7 on the Yellowjackets with a few 3-pointers, but Superior was able to respond with a steal by Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) and basket on the other end from Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled).  Superior would hold a 19-11 lead after one, bolstered by threes from Carpenter and Reinertsen.

Superior held the lead in the second. Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) would get an and-one at 6:56, and then a 2-point jumper at 4:49. Carptenter hit another three just minutes later, and Jade tucker would steal and score twice to hold a 36-24 lead at halftime.

Tucker scored the first points of the third on a layup followed by free throws from Norlin and Kontny. Superior would tack on a few of their 16 steals in the quarter, and then more free throws from Kontny would finish the quarter yet again on top.

The final quarter included a 3-pointer from Larson, assisted by Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover), and even more free throws from Kontny to seal the win for the Yellowjackets, beating the Storm 62-49.

Kontny had 15 points, shooting 11-of-14 from the free throw line, while Norlin had 13 points and seven rebounds. Tucker shot 4-of-6 from the field for eight points.

The 'Jackets had 51 rebounds in the game, including 20 on the offensive end.

Superior will play Bethany Lutheran this Saturday, Jan. 6, at 5 p.m.
