Superior scores three in final period to beat Northland

UW-Superior 4, Northland 1

SUPERIOR, Wis. (January 5, 2018) – The 'Jackets faced a familiar opponent in the Lumberjills, as Northland made the 64-mile drive along Highway 2. Superior found their mojo in the third period, piling on three goals in the final period.

The first 10 minutes of the opening period were a Yellowjacket onslaught of shots, outshooting the Lumberjills 9-1. The 'Jackets weren't able to find the net in that time, even firing shots on their own penalty kill, after Sam Westgaard (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) took two minutes for hooking. This trend continued throughout the period, as Superior outshot Northland 13-2, but was unable to find the twine, ending the period 0-0.

The second period was much of the same, both teams found shots, but the Lumberjills found a stroke of luck, scoring the penalty shot goal at 10:31 of the period, after Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) was called for hooking. The 'Jackets wouldn't let the period end down one. Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) found her 10th goal of the season at 18:18 of the second, after Mikayla Goodin (Andover, Minn./Andover) broke away with the puck and dished it for the score. Mandy Tomlinson (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) was also credited an assist, the game was tied 1-1 at the half.

The tie didn't last long, Sergent found redemption in the opening minute, scoring at 00:46 assisted by Agnese Apsite (Dreilini, Latvia/Rig Distance Secondary) to go up 2-1 on the Lumberjills. Only 21 seconds later, Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) scored at 1:07 on an assist from Sergent to make it a 3-1 game in just 67 seconds.

Westgaard soon made it a 4-1 game, scoring her second collegiate goal; she had an assist from Lexie Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm). This would secure the Yellowjacket win easily, the ninth of the season.

The 'Jackets piled on the pucks in the fourth period, putting up 20 (46 total) to the Lumberjills eight; yet, spent more time in the penalty box. Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) was solid in goal once again, making 16 saves on the game.

Superior will look for their 10th win against St. Olaf tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in Wessman Arena.
