Macalester 1, Yellowjackets 0
ST. PAUL, Minn.: It was one of those matches Thursday evening for the Yellowjacket women's soccer team. They had trouble getting things going offensively, but they were still just one shot away from picking up a big win on the road.
Unfortunately, that big scoring opportunity never came their way, and the Yellowjackets dropped another tough one-goal game, this time falling 1-0 to Macalester. The low-scoring affiar marked the ninth time this season the Yellowjackets have seen a game decided by the slimmest of margins.
The teams played through a scoreless first half with Macalester holding the edge in shots attempted and shots on goal, but Yellowjacket goalkeeper
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) was once again stout in goal, turning away every opportunity the Scots threw her way.
At the half Yellowjacket Head Coach
Allison DeGroot made a change in goal and
Linnea Bollum (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) took over for Gutekunst. As the second half unfolded the score remained deadlocked, but that changed in the 76th minute, however, when the Scots broke through. Alice Bieda got a rebound off a Bollum save and one-touched a pass to the right side of the net, where Yukeria Haywood tapped it in to give Macalester all the offense they would need and a 1-0 lead.
With the minutes ticking off the clock the Yellowjackets weren't able to generate the offensive chance they needed and Macalester earned the win.
Gutekunst made 5 saves in the first half before giving way to Bollum, who stopped seven of the eight shots she faced. Bollum's record for the year now stands at 0-2-0.
Kaylie Johnson (Amery, Wis./Amery) had the lone shot on goal in the match for the Yellowjackets.
