Yellowjackets 3, Rockford 0
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.: Friday marked the final non-conference match of the regular season for the Yellowjacket women's soccer team, as it traveled to Minneapolis for a meeting with Rockford University out of Illinois. The Yellowjackets were looking to get back in the win column and set a positive tone heading into the final three conference matches of the season.
It took a while, but the Yellowjackets got what they needed, scoring three times in the final 11 minutes to shut down Rockford 3-0.
The first half was scoreless with the Yellowjackets holding a 6-3 edge in shots. As the second half unfolded the Yellowjackets continued to apply pressure but still had nothing to show for the effort. That changed late in the match when the Yellowjackets broke the scoreless battle. With just over 10 minutes to play
Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) scored her fourth goal of the year, and the Yellowjackets took a 1-0 lead. It didn't stay that way for long, as Fjeran struck again 1:11 later to make it 2-0. The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring in the 86th minute as
Liza Shelquist (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) picked up her second goal of the season to make it a 3-0 final.
The Yellowjackets outshot Rockford 14-7 for the match, and had an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Fjeran and
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) each had three shots to lead the way. Fjeran had three shots on goal on the day, while
Chloe Schmaltz (Beaumount, Alberta/Escole Secondaire Beaumont Composite) was next with two.
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets and made a pair of saves in the first half.
Linnea Bollum (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) took over and played the second half, also making two saves. Bollum earned the win, her first collegiate victory, and her record now stands at 1-2-0.
Up Next: It's a quick turnaround for the Yellowjackets (5-10-1, 4-5-0 U.M.A.C.) as they return home to take on North Central in the final home game of the regular season. It's Senior Day, and the festivities will get underway from the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
