Yellowjackets 3, Northland 0
SUPERIOR, Wis.: The Yellowjacket volleyball team ran off the first nine points of the match Wednesday and didn't look back, rolling over Northland, 3-0, at The Mertz.
UWS won in straight sets for the 13th time this season. The victory, the Yellowjackets' fourth in six matches overall, improves them to 19-11 and 13-2 in the U.M.A.C.
Five players registered at least five kills apiece as
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji),
A.J. Runck (Annandale, Minn./Apple Valley) and
Cami Sletta (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) each tallied six.
Karlie Leif (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) added a match-high 13 digs to lead the defensive effort.
Mackenzie Troost (Montello, Wis./Montello) came off the bench to provide five kills and a pair of blocks in the win.
The Yellowjackets were never seriously challenged in the match, winning the first two sets by identical 25-9 scores. UWS prevailed in the third set, 25-13.
The 'Jackets hit .337 as a team on the night with 44 kills and just 10 errors.
UWS earned a 16-2 advantage in the first set, leading to Northland's second timeout of the set, after a Sletta kill.
Jordyn O'Brien (Superior, Wis./Superior) capped the set with a kill of her own from
Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) to put the 'Jackets up, 1-0, in the match.
The second set was much of the same as UWS rallied for 14 for the first 18 points and cruised to a set-set advantage. It ended when Runck put down a kill from VerWay.
Northland took the first two points of the third set, but Superior bounced back, to claim a 12-point victory to close the match.
Kaitlyn Severson paced the Lumberjills with five kills and Adrianna Galtieri added nine digs as Northland fell to 4-24 overall and 3-13 in the U.M.A.C.
