Relentless Offensive Attack Fuels Rout Of Saints

Yellowjackets 4, St. Scholastica 1

SUPERIOR, Wis.: Yellowjacket Head Coach Joe Mooney is known for greeting people with a "happy game day" on days his team is in action. It can be a passer-by in the hallway, or a member of his own team. When he addresses his charges as a group and uses the opener, the team answers with a resounding cheer.

On Monday, it wasn't just Mooney's team that had a happy game day. The rowdy crowd of 231 on a crisp, rain-filled night at the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex also got to enjoy a happy game day. That's because Mooney's Yellowjackets employed an aggressive, relentless attack that put Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica on its heels from the outset. Consistency in the form of two goals in each half was more than enough offense as the Yellowjackets dispatched the Saints 4-1.

The Yellowjackets are now unbeaten in their last 12 matches (11-0-1) and sit in sole possession of first place in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference, holding a five-point lead over second-place Minnesota Morris.

Monday's match was another full-blooded affair in the hotly contested rivalry, as the teams combined for 26 fouls and six yellow cards. And after feeling the first meeting between the two got away from them, the Yellowjackets were determined to go home with the victory in Bridge Battle 2.0.

Back-and-forth play sprinkled with fouls marked the opening minutes of the match. Mooney then made a substitution, installing the dynamic Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) into the lineup, and the freshman immediately electrified the partisan crowd. He brought them to their feet in the 27th minute, scoring his seventh goal of the season to make it 1-0. Perry broke down the left side and then his left foot turned into a missile launcher, letting a screaming shot go that glanced off the post and in. Adrian Leal (Alicante, Spain/IES Cabo de la Huerta) got the assist.

In the final minute of the half the Yellowjackets extended the lead. Leonardo Paredes (Uberlandia, Brazil/Colegio Sao Paschoall) started the play, tapping a pass to Gustavo Barbieri (Florianópolis, Brazil/Colégio Tendência) and he made no mistake, chipping the ball past a sprawled St. Scholastica goalkeeper to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. It was Barbieri's third goal of the season.

St. Scholastica broke the shutout and cut the Yellowjacket lead in half early in the second, getting a goal off a Darby Henderson header just over five minutes in to make it 2-1.

But the Yellowjackets quickly answered, regaining the two-goal lead in the 62nd minute. Leal and Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) worked the ball toward the Saints goal before moving the play to James Bruce (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone), and the Yellowjackets' leader in goals did what he's been doing all season, tipping a shot past the Saints' goalkeeper, making it a 3-1 game. For Bruce, who has scored in seven of the last nine matches, it was his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring in the 71st minute when Ocampo picked up his first goal of the year. Fernando Bicalho (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil/Kickapoo (Wis.)) started the play, getting a loose ball off of a scramble in the St. Scholastica box and tapping it to Miguel Ocampo (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) who found the back of the net to make the final score 4-1.

Shots in the match favored the Yellowjackets, 25-13. Shots on goal were 12-5 Yellowjackets.

Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan H.S.) was rock solid in goal for the Yellowjackets, finishing the match with four saves. His record now stands at a stellar 9-1-1 on the year.

Up Next: The Yellowjackets (11-2-1, 6-0-1 U.M.A.C.) are back home Saturday, October 13 when they host Martin Luther. It's also Youth Day, where all youth are admitted to the match free of charge. The match is set to start at 2:00 p.m. at the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex.
