SAINT PAUL, Minn.: Hamline held off a hard-charging UW-Superior men's basketball team, 75-69, at Hutton Arena Tuesday.
The Yellowjackets rebounded from Hamline's hot-shooting first half to close to within 60-58 with less than five minutes to play, powered by a 24-11 run over eight-plus minutes. From there, Hamline (1-1) was 9-for-9 from the free-throw line to ensure the win.
Senior
Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while
Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) added 16 points, two boards and a steal to pace UWS (1-3).
Trailing, 49-34, with 13:15 left, Superior began to make its move. Freshman
Da'Koi Hines (Minneapolis, Minn./North Community) and Scott had consecutive baskets, and after a Hamline hoop,
Joe Kramer (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) hit a 3-pointer to make it a 51-39 game. The Pipers tallied the next six, but
Andrew McGill's (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union) layup at the 9:54 mark set off a 13-0 run for the Yellowjackets. Reykdal had six points in the stretch on a pair of threes, while Scott buried another triple, and the 'Jackets cut it to a 57-52 deficit with seven-and-a-half minutes left. The run continued as Reykdal made good on four free throws and a floater in the lane at the end of the shot clock with 4:55 left, but that was as close as UWS got.
Superior trailed, 40-27, at the break. The Pipers were 16-of-32 from the field in the first half and shot nearly 47 percent for the game. The 'Jackets hit on six of their 12 threes in the second half to help them back into the game. UWS was 43.4 percent from the floor on 23-of-53 shooting for the night and outrebounded Hamline, 36-28.
Connor Knutson led three Hamline players in double figures with a game-high 23 points. Ethan Scheuring had 14 points and Isaac Brooks 10.
UWS returns home to host Minnesota Duluth in exhibition action Thursday at 7 p.m., at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. The Yellowjackets are back in regular-season action at Marian at 4 p.m.
