DE PERE, Wis.: The UW-Superior women's basketball team captured the St. Norbert Tip-Off Tournament, cruising to a 74-57 win over the host Green Knights at Mulva Sports Center Saturday.
The Yellowjackets never trailed in the contest to improve to 2-0 on the season. Seventeen 'Jackets saw action and 10 scored. Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) and Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) led the UWS offense for a second consecutive game, as Reinertson had a game-high 15 points and Norlin added 13. The pair was named to the all-tournament team, with Norlin claiming MVP honors.
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter), Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior) and Marisa Ruiz contributed nine points apiece with Ruiz's effort coming in just 14 minutes off the bench.
As a team, the 'Jackets shot a blistering 65.4 percent from the field on 17-for-26 shooting in the first half to help them build their advantage. They also connected on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.
Superior had a 22-7 edge after the first quarter that expanded to 43-19 by halftime. The 'Jackets cooled off some in the second half, shooting 28.1 percent and making just nine shots from the floor, but the Green Knights were never a threat.
Norlin gave the visitors their largest lead of the day when she rebounded a Carpenter missed 3-pointer, went back up, and was fouled. Norlin knocked down the ensuing free throws to give the Yellowjackets a 65-32 lead with 8:32 remaining in the game. UWS won the glass again Saturday, outrebounding St. Norbert, 37-31, including, 14-10, on the offensive end.
The Yellowjacket defense forced St. Norbert into 23 turnovers, leading to 25 points, as well.
Sarah Ratajczyk scored 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss for St. Norbert (1-1) and Macie Zurfluh added 13 of her own to go with three boards and two assists.
The Yellowjackets next travel to play Augsburg Monday at 7 p.m.
