Yellowjackets 6, Northland 3
SUPERIOR, Wis.: Just over a week ago the Yellowjacket men's hockey team and Northland College tangled for the first time in 2018-19. Despite struggles, the Yellowjackets led after two periods, only to see that lead dissolve when things went awry in the first five minutes of the third.
Saturday night the Yellowjackets were offered a chance at redemption as they welcomed the Lumberjacks to Wessman Arena. And redemption is what they would get, as the Yellowjackets scored twice in each period on the way to a 6-3 win.
The Yellowjackets opened the scoring early when
Troy MacTavish (Kanata, Ontario/Earl of March) won a faceoff back to
Troy York (Plano, Texas/West), and the sophomore made no mistake, wristing a shot past Northland goaltender David Krejcik to make it 1-0 at 5:11 of the first.
Freshman
Will Blake (Champlin, Minn./Breck) extended the lead at 11:40 when he intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and went in on the breakaway. Blake faked to the forehand before going to the backhand and flipping a shot past Krejcik for his first collegiate goal.
Northland would get that goal back just 15 seconds later when Kyle Pouncy scored on a rebound and the teams would go to the locker room with the Yellowjackets up 2-1 after one period.
The two Yellowjacket goals in the second period were of the pretty variety. Blake got things started with a slick pass from the right side that found a wide-open
Chad Lopez (Arlington, Texas/University of Texas at Arlington) in front of the net and the freshman put him his sixth of the year to make it 3-1.
Northland pulled back to within one at 13:50 of the second when Gus Ford scored on a deflection to make it a 3-2 game.
Before the period was done the Yellowjackets would again open up a two-goal lead. At 16:07
Liam Blais (Uxbridge, Ontario/Uxbridge Secondary) worked the puck down the left wing and made a perfect pass to the slot for freshman
Jordan Martin (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) and he converted the odd-man rush, going upstairs to make it 4-2. It was the first collegiate goal for Martin.
Just 1:28 into the third period the Yellowjackets gave themselves a three-goal lead.
Andrew Durham (Richardson, Texas/Plano East) broke into the Northland zone and from the left circle put a shot past the glove of Northland goaltender Taylor Unruh to make it 5-2. It was the seventh straight game with a goal for Durham.
A few minutes later Northland got one back, making it 5-3 at 4:40. Zackary Murphy got the goal, lifting a shot from the left circle into the top corner.
The Yellowjackets closed out the scoring at 14:28 of the third when
Artur Terchiyev (Kiev, Ukraine/Everst Academy) snapped a shot past Unruh from the high slot, giving him his second power play goal of the season to make the final score 6-3.
A.J. Smith (Keller, Texas/Southlake Carroll) got the start and the win in goal for the Yellowjackets, finishing the game with 22 saves. The Yellowjackets outshot Northland 42-25 in the game.
Up Next: The Yellowjackets (3-6-1, 0-0-0 W.I.A.C.) will open the conference portion of their season at home Friday, November 30 when they host UW-Stout. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 7:05 p.m.
