SUPERIOR, Wis.: The UW-Superior women's basketball team celebrated its home opener in style Wednesday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym, defeating St. Benedict, 77-52.
Senior forward Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) scored a game-high 19 points on 9-for-17 shooting, becoming the 11th player in school history to eclipse 1,000 career points, while moving into the top 10 on the 'Jackets' all-time scoring list. She also grabbed 13 rebounds to complete her second double-double of the season.
Superior put three players in double figures in winning its second consecutive game. Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) (12 points) and Morgan Anderson (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) (10) joined Norlin in double digits as the Yellowjackets improved to 4-1 on the season. St. Benedict fell to 2-2 with the loss.
UWS built a big early lead and cruised the rest of the way. The 'Jackets led 26-8 after one quarter, expanding the advantage to 42-23 at the half.
Norlin did most of her damage the opening 20 minutes with eight points and 13 rebounds. Needing 18 points coming into the game for 1,000, she reached the milestone with a layup, assisted by Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids), to make it 68-46 with 5:42 to play.
The Yellowjackets led by as many as 31 points when Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) converted one of two free throws with 2:33 remaining in the third quarter to push the lead to 60-29.
The Bennies were able to creep closer, closing the gap to 18, as Haylee Fingalsen knocked down a 3-pointer off of a feed from Shae Olsen with 7:16 left to make it 64-46, but it was too little, too late.
Superior shot 50.8 percent for the game, including 52 percent in the second half. The 'Jackets outrebounded the Bennies by a 45-31 margin.
Megan Thompson led St. Benedict with 12 points and Fingalsen chipped in 10.
