Women’s Soccer Falls in U.M.A.C. Championship Match

SAINT PAUL, Minn.: Coming off of an emotional last-minute win in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament semifinals, the UW-Superior women's soccer team was riding high heading into the title match with No. 2-seed Northwestern.

Similar to Wednesday's victory over archrival St. Scholastica, the Yellowjackets defended much of the match, being outshot 28-3, and were able to hang around, making things difficult for the Eagles, before ultimately falling, 2-0.

Northwestern (11-6-4) received second-half goals from Emily Currie and R.J. Mullin in the 60th and 69th minutes, respectively, to earn the league's automatic bid to the N.C.A.A. tournament slated for next week.

The Yellowjackets' freshman goalkeeper Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) again kept her team in the match, making 10 saves, including six in the first half. Northwestern finally got one by her when Currie finished off a Linley Norman feed for the lead at the 59:32 mark.

The Eagles added to their lead 68:21 into the match when Alexis Albrecht found Mullin and she found the back of the net.

Superior's Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) had a pair of chances for the Yellowjackets to get back into it late. She hit a rising shot over the crossbar in the 84th minute, and then fired one in the 87th that Northwestern goalkeeper Samantha Colombo stopped. Colombo made two saves in the victory for the Eagles with the other coming against Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) in the first half.

The Yellowjackets had shut out their last three opponents and were making their first-ever U.M.A.C. tournament appearance under second-year head coach Allison DeGroot. UWS finishes the season 8-11-3 overall, a four-win improvement the 2017 season. The match also marked the end of the careers for a seven-player senior class: Amber Brazier (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids), Mackenzie Dahlin (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna), Kelli Graham (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg), Amy Lemenager (Duluth, Minn./Proctor)Emily Roe (Blaine, Wash./Blaine), Chloe Schmaltz (Beaumount, Alberta/Escole Secondaire Beaumont Composite) and Liza Shelquist (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island).
