Stevens Point 4, Yellowjackets 0
SUPERIOR, Wis.: The Yellowjacket men's hockey team faced its stiffest test of the 2018-19 season when it hosted UW-Stevens Point Saturday night at Wessman Arena. The Pointers entered the game unbeaten and were the top-ranked team in the country.
And it's safe to say the Pointers came as advertised.
UW-Stevens Point got goals in every period and shut down the Yellowjackets to earn a 4-0 win.
B.J. Duffin opened the scoring for the Pointers, beating Yellowjacket goaltender
A.J. Smith (Keller, Texas/Southlake Carroll) on a wrap around to the right of the goal to make it 1-0 just 2:37 into the game. They increased the lead to 2-0 on a Luke McElhenie goal at 2:44 of the second period. They then added a pair of power play goals, one by Colin Raver at 14:32 of the second and another by Carter Roo at 5:43 of the third period to make the final score 4-0.
The Yellowjackets had opportunities, particularly on the power play, including a five minute power play in the first period and three consecutive tries in the third period, but found the going tough. Stevens Point outshot the Yellowjackets 30-24 in the game.
Troy York (Plano, Texas/West) and
Jordan Martin (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) each had four shots to lead the Yellowjackets, who also got three shots apiece from
Troy MacTavish (Kanata, Ontario/Earl of March),
David Kaplan (Vernon Hills, Ill./Bishop Eustace Prep), and
Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior).
Up Next: The Yellowjackets (3-7-2, 0-1-1 W.I.A.C.) will hit the road for a non-conference series at Saint Mary's. Game time Friday night from the S.M.U. Ice Arena is set for 7:00 p.m.
