Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Yellowjackets Fall at St. Scholastica, 5-2

DULUTH, Minn.: St. Scholastica received goals from five different skaters, including four on the power play, to top the UW-Superior women's hockey team, 5-2, at Mars-Lakeview Arena Tuesday.

Down, 3-0, late in the second period, the Yellowjackets battled back to cut the deficit to 3-2. Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) scored her third of the season at 19:26 of the middle frame, and Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) followed at 7:15 of the third with her eighth, but that was as close as UWS could get.

Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) was assessed a major penalty for kneeing at 8:17 and Rachel Anderson made the 'Jackets pay, scoring her sixth from Kayla Kasel and Taylor Thompson at 10:35 to restore a two-goal cushion at 4-2

The Saints added an insurance tally on the power play by Mariah Haedrich with 17 seconds remaining for the final margin.

Goaltender Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) was steady in net for UWS, making 26 saves, including 21 over the second and third periods.

Coming off of scoring 11 goals in a two-game weekend sweep of Finlandia Friday and Saturday, UWS carried that confidence against CSS, outshooting the Saints, 33-31. Lexi Thomeczek made 31 saves for the Saints.

St. Scholastica (8-3-1) opened the scoring at 3:28 of the first period when Paige Forsman's shot found its way through traffic and past Johnson. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Amber Tilander and Courtney Bloemke.

Martinson appeared to tie the game, 1-1 at 5:22 of the second period, but she was ruled to have knocked the puck in with high stick.

The Saints added to the lead as Kasel, converted the rebound of an Anderson shot, sliding the puck by a sprawling Johnson at 8:43. Thomson also assisted on Kasel's fourth goal of the year that made it 2-0.

Bloemke made it 3-0 just over two minutes later on a strong individual effort, stickhandling through several defenders before beating Johnson at 10:46 with her third goal of the season.

UWS finished 1-for-4 with 11 shots on the power play while St. Scholastica was 4-for-9 with 24 shots with an extra skater.

Superior (4-9-1) breaks for finals before returning to the ice Jan. 4-5 at Finlandia.
