SUPERIOR, Wis.: Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) scored a game-high 22 points and
Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) added 17 to help the UW-Superior men's basketball team end an eight-game losing steak with a 67-64 win over Northland at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Wednesday.
A tight game throughout, it featured eight ties and eight lead changes with the Lunberjacks not able to gain separation of more than two points the entire evening.
Adam Arroyo (St. Paul, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran Academy) earned his second consecutive start and responded with eight points and six rebounds in 17 minutes. Scott added 11 rebounds to complete his third double-double of the season. Reykdal shot 7-for-11 from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range.
Andrew McGill (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union) chipped in nine points in 14 minutes off the bench, as well.
Scott hit a trey for a 22-21 Yellowjackets' lead with 9:10 remaining in the first half. The lead changed hands once more before a Reykdal jumper made it 26-24 with 6:22 left in the period. Scott hit a pair of free throws 40 seconds later to grow the lead to four. The Lumberjacks battled back to take the lead once again on an Ethan Rycenga 3-pointer, 30-28, with 4:18 left in the half, but Superior used a 7-1 run to claim a 35-31 lead, capping the spurt with 48 seconds left on a Reykdal triple, assisted by
John Pioro (Proctor, Minn./Proctor).
The 'Jackets opened a 48-41 advantage six-and-a-half minutes into the second half when Pioro knocked down a jumper. Northland (3-6, 1-1 UMAC) chipped away, pulling to within 51-49 at 11:28 on a Brandon Galland 3-pointer. The 'Jackets responded with a McGill basket in the paint with 9:31 to play, carrying the edge all the way home.
Ben Arqueros Jr. paced the Lumberjacks with 13 points. Northland shot a game-high 41 percent from the floor, but UWS (2-8, 1-2) won the battle of the boards, 40-32.
Superior travels to Martin Luther Saturday at 4:45 p.m.
