SUPERIOR, Wis.: Four players scored at least six points apiece and the UW-Superior women's basketball team shot 56.5 percent from the field in the second half, topping Northland, 75-52, Wednesday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed seven rebounds and
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) added 14 points and eight boards to lead the Yellowjackets (8-1, 3-0 UMAC).
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) had eight points and three assists,
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) contributed six points and three steals off the bench and
Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) chipped in five points, six rebounds and three steals.
A physical game, it featured 44 fouls, 26 to the 'Jackets.
The Lumberjills (3-5, 0-2) held leads of the 3-0 and 6-4 in the first two-plus minutes, before a three-point play from Kane set off a12-2 run, ending when Reinertson made a bucket and was fouled for a three-point play of her own for a 16-8 lead with 2:46 left in the quarter.
Norlin had an offensive rebound and putback with a minute left to give the 'Jackets an 18-12 edge after one period.
Carpenter gave UWS its first double-digit lead at 7:16 mark, stealing a Lindsay Bressette pass and converting a layup at the other end to make it a 24-14 game. Superior led, 32-19, at the half.
The lead grew to 21 as Ruiz knocked down a pair of foul shots just over a minute into the second half for a 40-19 advantage. UWS took its largest lead of the night on a Reinertsen 3-pointer in the first minute of the fourth quarter to go up 60-31, and cruised the rest of the way.
UWS won the rebounding battle, 42-29, including 16-5 on the offensive glass.
Ashton Meadows scored 11 points to pace Northland, which dropped its third consecutive game.
The Yellowjackets travel to face Martin Luther Saturday at 3 p.m.
