Johnson Stops 40, but No. 8 Hamline Shuts Out ‘Jackets, 3-0

SAINT PAUL, Minn.: Goaltender Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) made 40 saves for the UW-Superior women's hockey team, but No. 8 Hamline got two goals from Bre Simon to shut out the Yellowjackets, 3-0, at TRIA Rink Tuesday.

McKenna Hulslander stopped all 25 shots she faced to earn her first shutout of the season for the Pipers, who improved to 8-1-0 on the season. With the loss, Superior fell to 2-8-1.

Molly Garin opened the scoring at 3:22 of the first period on the power play. Garin beat Johnson with an assist from Becca Zarembinski for her fourth goal of the season.

Almost six minutes later, Simon scored her seventh of the season from Jordan Hansen and Dani Perry, putting the puck in over Johnson's shoulder at 9:22.

Simon accounted for the final three-goal margin scoring her eighth goal from Perry and Leah Schwartzman.

Johnson made 20 saves in the second period to help give her team an opportunity in the third, but it wasn't to be. The 40 saves are one off of tying a season high for Johnson. She made 41 in the first meeting of the year against Hamline, a 2-1 overtime loss Oct. 30 at Wessman Arena.

Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) led the 'Jackets' offensive effort with five shots on goal.

UWS was 0-for-3 on the power play, while Hamline converted two of its five opportunities with an extra player. The Yellowjackets were solid in the faceoff circle winning 29-of-55 draws (53 percent) for the game.

The 'Jackets return home for a two-game set with Finlandia, beginning Friday at 7 p.m., to close first-semester schedule. The game is the team's Cause Day, benefiting Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank. Revenue generated from the game will be donated to specifically target childhood hunger.
