‘Jackets Overpowered at St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn.: Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) scored 17 points and Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) added 14, but the UW-Superior men's basketball team was overwhelmed by St. Scholastica, 85-51, in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Reif Gym Wednesday.

The Saints, who led throughout, shot 30-for-59 (50.8 percent) for the game as a team and had three players score double figures. Sixteen Yellowjackets saw the floor and nine scored as the UWS fell to 1-7 overall and 0-1 in the UMAC with the loss. St. Schloastica improved to 3-3 and 1-0 in the victory.

St. Scholastica scored the game's first eight points before Reykdal knocked down a 3-pointer to get the Yellowjackets on the board 2:52 into the contest. The Saints then embarked on a 17-4 run to make it a 25-7 game with 11:03 remaining in the half. Jarod Wilken scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in that stretch. The Saints limited the Yellowjackets' offense to 4-for-12 shooting the rest of the half, forcing eight turnovers, to jump out to 53-19 lead at the break.

The second half was much the same as the first. UWS cut the deficit 31 points on four different occasions and shot better in the final 20 minutes, but was unable to get momentum to make a move.

Scott shot 5-of-18 and Reykdal 4-of-8 on the night, each pulling down four rebounds.

Colin Anderson scored 15 points and Brandon Newman added 12 in support of the Saints.

The Saints turned 20 turnovers into 26 points and won the battle of the boards, 37-31 and got 16 points on the break in the game.

The Yellowjackets next travel to Minnesota Morris Saturday for a 4:45 p.m., tip.
