DULUTH, Minn.: The UW-Superior women's basketball team put three players in double digits, opening Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play with a 74-52 victory over St. Scholastica at Reif Gym Wednesday.
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her third double double of the season, while
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) added 14 points, two rebounds and two assists.
Kaly Kostrova (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) chipped in with 12 points, four boards and a steal as the Yellowjackets improved to 6-1 and 1-0 on the season. It marked Kostrova's first collegiate double-digit scoring effort.
After a back-and-fourth first six minutes that saw four tie scores and neither team get out to more than a four-point advantage, UWS took control, using a 15-2 run for a 19-10 lead as the period wound down.
Mackenzie Kmecik (Superior, Wis./Superior) scored five points in the run as the 'Jackets were 5-for-9 from the floor, holding St. Scholastica (0-5, 0-1) to 1-for-10 shooting.
Michaela Walther hit a 3-pointer a minute into the second quarter to get the Saints to within 19-16, but UWS ripped off another extended 13-4 run over 3:19 to grow its advantage to 32-20 with 4:50 before halftime. Reinertsen had five in that run.
The Yellowjackets were never threatened the rest of the way, growing their lead to 37-23 at the break while shooting 40.6 percent (13-of-32) in the first half.
Superior's largest lead of the third quarter came when
Morgan Anderson (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) rebounded a
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) miss and put it back up and in with 3:21 remaining in the period for a 53-27 edge.
The Saints whittled the deficit to 17 with nine consecutive points over the next 1:47, but that was as close as they got. The 'Jackets outscored CSS, 17-13, in the final 10 minutes.
UWS held a 50-32 rebounding advantage, including getting 10 from
Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) to go with her nine points. Anderson grabbed seven boards, while adding six points.
Walther scored 13 points to pace the St. Scholastica offense. Kaylee Kennedy also had 11.
The 'Jackets remain on the road, next traveling to Minnesota Morris Saturday for a 3 p.m., matchup.
