St. Scholastica 5, Yellowjackets 1
Â
Tuesday night marked the regular season finale for the Yellowjacket women's hockey team, and in the process they squared off against their rivals from across the river, the College of St. Scholastica.
Â
The Yellowjackets held an 11-4-1 edge in the all-time series, but after this night the Saints moved one step closer to evening that mark.
Despite putting nearly 50 shots on goal in the contest, the Yellowjackets came up short, falling 5-1 to the Saints at Mars-Lakeview Arena in Duluth.
Â
With the loss the Yellowjackets finish the regular season 14-9-2 overall and 3-4-2 in the WIAC.
Â
Things started strong for the Yellowjackets, as they drew first blood at 14:46 of the first period when
Lexie Weiss (Sleepy Eye, Minn./New Ulm) put home her third goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Kelly Cockerill (Selkirk, Man./Oak Park) and
Agnese Apsite (Dreilini, Latvia/Rig Distance Secondary) assisted on the goal.
Â
St. Scholastica answered a few minutes later when Rachel Anderson converted on the power play at 17:10 to tie the game.
Â
It stayed that way until after the midpoint of the second period, and that's when the Saints took the lead for good. The Saints got the eventual game-winning goal at 14:05 of the second period when Lindsey Wright scored. Anderson then added her second of the game just a couple minutes later to stretch the St. Scholastica lead to 3-1 after two periods.
Â
In the third period the Saints added two more, getting goals from Abby Sawyer at 8:45 of the period, followed by a power play goal from Kaleigh Hamann at 14:49 to make the final score 5-1.
Â
As has been the case throughout the season
Sky Brown (Lenore, Man./Virden Collegiate Institute) got the start in goal for the Yellowjackets, and she finished with 18 saves. At the other end Lexi Thomeczek was busier, as the Yellowjackets peppered her throughout the game to the tune of 46 shots.
Â
For the game the Yellowjackets took seven penalties for 17 minutes, compared to just three penalties for six minutes on the Saints. The Yellowjackets were scoreless in three power play chances while the Saints scored twice in eight chances.
Â
Up Next: The Yellowjackets get a break as they head into the WIAC playoffs, slated for February 23-24. Currently the No. 2 seed, the Yellowjackets know that they will play UW-Eau Claire in the semifinals, they just don't know when or where as of yet. The outcome of the UW-River Falls/UW-Eau Claire game to be played Saturday, February 17 will help determine the times and location of the series. Stay tuned to
