Superior gets big Senior Day win

UW-Superior 101, North Central 64

SUPERIOR, Wis. (February 17, 2018) – Superior shot an outstanding 60.9 percent from the field to get a huge win over North Central on Saturday's Senior Day. Senior Amelia Leger (Andover, Minn./Andover) was in full force as she went 6-of-6 from the field, hitting 5-of-5 3-pointers for 17 points.

Brittany Laehn (Gilmanton, Wis./Gilmanton) got the party started for the Yellowjackets, getting her first start of the season and hitting the 2-point jumper on a pass from Jade Tucker (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) at 9:16 of the first quarter. It was then the first of Leger's threes at 8:49 on a pass from Justine Larson (Stanchfield, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) to make it 5-2 'Jackets.

Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior) and Tucker then found layups to get to 9-5, followed by a Larson steal and score at 6:36. Superior continued to pound the paint with two baskets from Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield), but then flipped the ball outside to Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) for a 3-pointer at 2:37. The 'Jacket lead would hold at 26-19 after the first quarter.

Leger hit another three to open up the second half, sparking a 9-2 run from the 'Jackets that included two layups from Larson and one from Kontny. Leger added another three at the 7:17 mark and Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) made her way to the lane for the scoop and score at 6:42, making it a 17-point lead. The scoring continued as Norlin found a layup on a pass from Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior) and Carpenter knocked down a three, also on a pass from Leadstrom. The 'Jackets would get out to a 57-29 lead heading into halftime.

It was a Yellowjacket onslaught from here on out, Tucker and Larson would get buckets to open the third, followed by a Kontny layup and another Leger 3-pointer to make it 66-33 Superior. The lead would continue to increase at 3:32 of the second when Reinertsen hit the layup on another assist from Leadstrom to get a 41-point lead. It then grew to a 45-point contest at 1:48 when Leadstrom got a basket of her own. This would end the quarter 85-40 with Superior on top.

The final quarter of play saw action from a batch of 'Jacekts. Kaly Kastrova would hit a 3-pointer on a pass from Morgan Nepstad (Hendrum, Minn./Park Christian) to get the final period rolling, and then two free throws from Leadstrom and a three from Lindsey Jalivay (Eagan, Minn./Rosemount) got the lead back to 35 points at 3:17. Alisha Ross (Ortonville, Minn./Ortonville), Madison Strube (Princeton, Minn./Princeton), and Morgan Anderson (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) would all find the basket to end the game with a big 101-64 win.

Leger led the 'Jackets with 17 points, while Norlin added 16 of her own. Reinertsen and Carpenter played well off the bench, getting 12 and 10 points respectively. Superior was a force on the boards, outrebounding the Rams 37-31.

The Yellowjackets now turn their attention to the UMAC Tournament. They will face either Northwestern or St. Scholastica on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mertz.
