UW-River Falls 4, UW-Superior 1
SUPERIOR, Wis (February 8, 2018) – The Yellowjakets had a reversal of fortunes in their second meeting with the UW-River Falls Falcons. In a rare Thursday night game, Superior came up short on Senior Night after producing the game's first goal.
Superior started off well in the first, collecting a goal from senior Ian Ecklund (Twig, Minn./Proctor) on passes from Bruno Birzitis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Distance Education Secondary) and Daniel Litchke (Superior, Wis./Superior) to make it a 1-0 'Jacket lead a 4:55. The Yellowjackets then found themselves in the penalty box, but was able to kill all three attempts. The 'Jackets also had a power play chance of their own in the first, but were unable to capitalize. Superior held the lead after one period.
The Falcons then jumped on the Yellowjackets, scoring three unanswered goals in the second period, including two from Eddie Matsushima, to make it a 3-1 game heading into the second intermission.
The third period saw a quick goal from River Falls at the 00:48 mark of the final period, going up 4-1 on Superior. The Yellowjackets would continue to fight, but couldn't get a goal to find twine; the power play chances were even on both sides in the period, three apiece, but it was ultimately the penalty box that hurt the Yellowjackets, surrendering eight in the game.
Cole Skinner (Lunenberg, N.S./Parkview Education Centre) played all sixty minutes between the pipes for Superior, making 23 saves on the night. The Yellowjackets kept the shots and faceoffs even throughout the game, getting 25 shots and 34-won faceoffs, but the Falcons edged with 27 and 37 respectively.
Aidan Salerno (Long Beach, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) and Ecklund were the two leaders in shots on the game, putting up four and three.
The Yellowjackets will look to bounce back in their final regular-season game tomorrow night as they travel to Eau Claire. The final puck is set to drop at 7 p.m. in Hobbs Ice Center.
