Carroll University 12, UW-Superior 5
TUCSON, Ariz. (March 17, 2018) – In their first game of the Tucson Invitational, the Yellowjakcets faced a familiar opponent in the Carroll Pioneers, a team they've played twice already this season. Superior held a lead until the fifth inning, but was unable to hold on to the win.
Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) was able to move into scoring position in the first inning after a single put him on base, and he stole second; Spencer Lawniczak (Pulaski, Wis./Pulaski) then moved to first on a walk. It was Matt Boyde that drove both runners in on a double to put the 'Jackets up 2-0 after one.
The Pioneers would add a run in their half of the second, while the Yellowjackets would add one more when Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) singled and moved to second on interference. He found home on two sacrifice plays, up 3-1 after two.
The final two runs of the game for Superior would come in the fourth and fifth innings, as Ryan Castaneda (San Pedro, Calif./Junipero Serra) scored on a Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) double, while Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) scored on a double from C. Albertson.
The Yellowjackets would hold a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Pioneers would string together eight runs in the final three innings to win the game.
