Oberlin 4, UW-Superior 3 | Carroll 12, UW-Superior 2
TUCSON, Ariz. (March 21, 2018) – The Yellowjackets came up short in both contests Wednesday at the Tucson Invitational, first in a close game with Oberlin and then in a seven-inning contest with Carroll.
Game 1
Trevor Roszczewski (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union) got the start on the mound for the Yellowjackets, making quick work of the first three batters by collecting three-straight groundouts.
Both teams would be in a pitcher's duel moving forward, as Superior collected two early hits from Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount), singling twice up the middle in the second and fifth innings. Oberlin was able to put together four runs in the first and sixth innings to take a 4-0 lead late.
The Yellowjackets never gave up. In the top of the ninth, visiting Superior mounted their comeback, starting with Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle). The senior infielder roped a triple to left center to lead off in scoring position. Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) then found first on a walk, and with two on, it was Barr's turn. He homered to left field, creating just a one-run gap, 4-3 Yoemen.
After a pitching change, the Yellowjackets found two more on base with a Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) single and Stephen Albertson (Stillwater, Minn/Stillwater) was hit by pitch to move to first. After a caught stealing attempt and two outs, Colin Welch (Acton, Calif./Golden Valley) doubled down the left field line to move Albertson to third, but the comeback was cut just short on a ground ball to the third baseman.
Game 2
The Pioneers got their bats going in the first inning, bringing in a runner in on a sacrifice fly. The Yellowjackets would get runners on base in Albertson and Barr after a walk and single, but were unable to score.
Carroll would add two more runs in the third inning, and Superior would score their first run of the game in the same inning. Albertson and Barr would both single and two outs would advance Albertson home and Barr to third.
A big fifth inning for the Pioneers stretched their lead out to a nine-point game, 10-1. The Yellowjackets would add their other score in the final seventh inning when Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) scored on a Mike Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) sacrifice to short. The game would end 'Jackets upended 12-2.
