'Jackets downed by Saints in home opener

St. Scholastica 23, UW-Superior 8 (7 innings) | St. Scholastica 16, UW-Superior 11

SUPERIOR, Wis. (April 11, 2018) – The 'Jackets scored 19 runs in two games against rival St. Scholastica, but couldn't find a win in their home opener Wednesday.

Game 1

The Yellowjackets had a rough go in the first half inning, down early, but would soon score three runs in the second inning on hits from Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) and Pitts. They then added two more on a Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) two-run shot to center to make it 18-5. The 'Jackets got to eight runs by the sixth on a sacrifice fly and double from Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater), but the lead was too much to overcome, falling 23-8 in seven innings.

Game 2

The second game got off to a good start for Superior, Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) was able to lift the ball over the left-field wall to go up 1-0 early. The Saints fired back in the next half inning to score two.

Scholastica added three runs in the fourth to make it a 5-2 game.

Superior loaded the bases in the fifth inning after a walk from Greg Pitts (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) and two singles from Rolf and C. Albertson; with two outs, Boyde jacked the ball to left field for the grand slam. The 'Jackets were up 6-5 after five innings.

The Saints found two scores after loading the bases in the sixth, taking the lead 7-6. The bottom of the sixth saw a game-tying RBI from Nick McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) as he brought Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) on a single to left field, making it 7-7. Braeden Bar then drew a walk for another score to take the lead.

It was a back-and-forth game as the Saints took a lead in the seventh to lead 10-8. The Yellowjackets would then tie the game after a single to right field from Rolf brought home Osness and Pitts. It was 10-10 heading to the eighth inning.

The Saints found the final run of the game in the top of the ninth, scoring on a double to make it 11-10, and then 12-10 after a bunt single. Another double put the game out of reach at 15-10.

C. Albertson had a great second game, 4-of-5 with three singles and a homer, while Boyde was 4-of-8 in two games including a home run.
