SUPERIOR, Wis. (April 25, 2018) – The Yellowjackets fell in two games with St. Scholastica Wednesday afternoon; Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) had five hits on the day.
Game 1
Superior was down early when the Saints put up four runs in the first two innings, but the 'Jackets bounced back in the bottom of the second. White led off the inning with a single up the middle, and then Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) advanced to first on a hit-by-pitch. Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) singled to left to load the bases, and another hit-by-pitch to Bobbi Jean Miller (Oak Grove, Minn./St. Francis) scored the first run for Superior. A second run was added just after when Sarah Fjeran (Duluth, Minn./Marshall School) singled up the middle. It was 4-2 Saints.
The Saints added four more in the following two innings, making it an 8-2 game in the bottom of the fourth. The 'Jackets scored two runs with two outs in the inning; Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) smashed a double to let for two RBI and an 8-4 score.
Scholastica scored three in the top of the fifth, and Superior would add one in the bottom of the inning when Gidley sacrificed to second to score Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia).
The game was put out of reach in the sixth with more runs from Scholastica, and the 'Jackets couldn't find hits in the bottom of the inning, sealing the game at 17-5.
Game 2
Cragg singled to the left side in the second at-bat of the first, and then was brought home by a Saige Patrick (Steinbach, Man./St. Mary's Academy) double to center. White then singled on a full count to score Patrick. The 'Jackets held a 2-0 lead early.
The lead held until the top of the third when the Saints socred three on two hits, but Superior came back to score twice in the next half inning. Ciarra Stavang (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld ) would post a lead-off triple and was brought home by another Cragg single. Crag stole second to move into scoring position and it paid off when White singled up the middle for the RBI and a 4-3 'Jacket lead.
The Saints scored two in the fourth to take the lead, but Gidley doubled to begin the fourth for Superior and then scored when she flipped over the Saints' catcher on a fielder's choice. It was a 5-5 tie.
The game would remain tied until the sixth when Scholastica scored three, and then scored two in the seventh. The game went to a 10-5 final.
Cragg finished with three hits and three RBIs on the day, while White produced five hits for two RBIs.
