Theis allows one run in two ‘Jacket wins

SUPERIOR, Wis. (April 29, 2018) – The Yellowajckets wrapped up their regular season with two wins over Northland. Damara Theis (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) pitched two complete games, allowing only one run between the two.

Game 1

Northland found their only run of the day in the top of the first inning on a double to left center. The Yellowjackets responded with four runs in the top of the second when Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) singled through the left side, and Katie White (Pequot Lakes, Minn./Pequot Lakes) scored. Lizzy Borgwardt (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) then reached on an error to score two, followed by a sacrifice hit to third from Ciarra Stavang (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld ), scoring Kinnunen, to make it a 4-1 'Jacket lead.

Superior added a run in the fourth inning when Maggie Cragg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) reached on a fielders choice with the bases loaded, scoring Borgwardt. They added the final runs of the game in the fifth on another Kinnunen hit, and a Borgwardt sacrifice fly to center, scoring Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior).

The Yellowjackets held the lead through the seventh for the 7-1 win.

Game 2

Theis started both games for the Yellowjackets, and pitched a gem in the second. She retired the first 12 batters she faced, allowing the first hit of the game on the first pitch of the final inning.

The Yellowjackets had two huge innings in the fourth and fifth, scoring nine in the fourth on five hits, and then scoring five in the fifth with five hits.

It was a 14-0 Yellowjackets blowout.

Kinnunen and Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) had good days, combining for 8-of-12 from the dish and three RBIs.

The Yellowjackets (18-16, 11-4 UMAC) will play in the first round of the UMAC Tournament Thursday, May 3 hosted by St. Scholastica.
