Friday the Yellowjacket men's soccer team lost a tight match on the road at the University of St. Thomas, the team that knocked them from the N.C.A.A. tournament a year ago. Sunday the Yellowjackets came home to play on the friendly turf of the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex, but they would find the competition was just as unrelenting as the team they saw in the opener.
Also on Friday, Luther College came north and edged St. Scholastica despite heavily outshooting the Saints. There was no dip in their play Sunday, and the Norse came in and rained on the Yellowjackets in their home opener, scoring a goal in each half on the way to a 2-0 win.
Luther scored early when Tristan Davenport put one past Yellowjacket goalkeeper
Josh Herd (Hamilton, Scotland/Calderside Academy) to make it 1-0 at 12:59 of the match. Davenport would strike again later to give the Norse some insurance, heading a ball off a corner kick past Herd at 76:10, to make the final score 2-0.
Shots in the game favored Luther by an 11-4 margin.
Leonardo Paredes (Uberlandia, Brazil/Colegio Sao Paschoall) had two shots for the Yellowjackets, who also got shots from
Felix Blick (Linkoping, Sweden/Katedralskolan) and
Blake Hanson (Superior, Wis./Superior).
Herd was making his first start of the season Sunday and was tagged with the loss. He finished the match with three saves.
Up Next: The Yellowjackets (0-2-0, 0-0-0 U.M.A.C.) will be back home Wednesday, September 5 when they host Bethel University. Game time from the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex is set for 7:00 p.m.
