Yellowjackets 3, Crown 0
SUPERIOR, Wis.: Total domination.
Fans of the Yellowjacket volleyball team will have to go a long way back in the archives to find a match so thoroughly dominated by the black and gold. Perhaps it would be 20-plus years ago when the likes of All-American Angela Wait were taking down teams in the W.I.A.C. Perhaps it's even further back than that. Regardless, Saturday afternoon at The Mertz the Yellowjackets dominated the competition.
Last week the Yellowjackets took it to Crown College in a three-set sweep, and Saturday they took it a step further, dismantling the Storm and allowing them to win just 27 points, sweeping the match 3-0 with identical set scores of 25-9 in a snappy 58 minutes.
The Yellowjackets led the first set wire-to-wire, taking seven of the first 11 points. That's as close as the Storm would get. The Yellowjackets won five straight points and later would go on another five-point run to pull away. Up 17-8, the Yellowjackets won eight of the final nine points to take the set.
The second set was a bit tighter early, with the teams deadlocked at 7-7. Four straight Crown attack errors gave the Yellowjackets the lead, and they would win the final 13 points of the set to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
That roll to end the second set would continue into the third, with the Yellowjackets taking the first eight points (that's 21 straight points for those scoring at home) to blow it open early. The teams then traded points late in the third set, with the Yellowjackets closing it out on a Crown service error.
Hannah Goggleye (Calumet, Minn./Greenway) paced the Yellowjacket attack Saturday, leading the way with 12 kills and an attack percentage of .800.
Taylor Howe (Webster, Wis./Webster) had eight kills and
Cami Sletta (Willmar, Minn./Willmar) added seven. As a team the Yellowjackets attacked a .443 clip. They also had eight service aces, with Sletta and
Emily VerWay (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) having two apiece. VerWay finished the match with 34 assists and a team-high nine digs.
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) and
Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) each had eight digs while
Doranna Blascyk (Hoffman, Minn./West Central Area) had seven. Goggleye and
Ashlee Bayer (Cameron, Wis./Cameron) each had two blocks.
Up Next: The Yellowjackets (13-6, 8-1 U.M.A.C.) will travel across the river to take on St. Scholastica Tuesday, October 2. The match gets underway at 7:00 p.m.
